So what is Diastasis Recti? (Tummy gap/tummy separation)

It’s a splitting, stretching or separation of the outer abdominal wall. The job of these muscles is to support your back and your internal organs

So why does this happen?

If the muscles are weak due to the separation from being stretched, like when you have a baby or being overweight, the connective tissue (linea alba) which joins the muscle together,  it stretches sideways and this tissue become thinner and weaker, hence not doing its job properly and leading to possibly pelvic instability, bad posture, restrictive breathing and miss-alignment.

Any buildup of intra–abdominal pressure could add more problems, as will gravity, load, and force.  Lifting too heavy of a weight or load, breathing incorrectly, performing the wrong exercises, all have a bearing on your healing.

As diastasis recti puts a weakness on the abdominal wall, its functional strength role is greatly weakened, increasing possible back problems, pelvic instability, poor posture and restrictive breathing capacity.  Any intra-abdominal pressure created through lifting or putting any load could make the situation worse, so doing the right kind of exercise is vital, we want to heal not hinder the progress.  This program focused on all the positives things you can do, as most advice is saying things what not to do.

Nutrition, hydration, breathing techniques, soft tissue therapy, release, posture, and alignment are all intrinsic to positive healing of diastasis recti.

So how does it work?

Initially you will be asked to complete an in-depth Holistic Core Restore® questionnaire to decide if this programme is right for you and your needs.

  • An Initial consultation will take place in your own home or what is easy for you, lasts up to 90 minutes
  • Assessment of posture 
  • Nutrition and hydration assessment 
  • Establish breathing pattern technique
  • Diastasis check, tension and gap check
  • Soft tissue work to release any stuck or tight areas.
  • Homework (this may involve release work, exercises, tweaks to nutrition, selfcare and lifestyle habits 
  • 2 Follow-up appointment (usually taken every 2-3 weeks, depends on progress
